jumping on the bandwagon.

Well, I have succumbed. I have jumped on the bandwagon and bought a Nutribullet.
Younger lovely daughter has had one for several months now. Older lovely daughter had one for Christmas and both have been extolling their virtues ever since.
In case you are wondering, a Nutribullet is a very high powered blender which can turn vegetables and fruit ( even hard, raw ones like beetroot and apple) and nuts into a smooth puree in moments.
It has to be said that they are not cheap, but when I saw one on offer the other week, I took the plunge and bought one.
I am glad I did.


Now, a super nutritious smoothie is only ever moments away.
In particular, I've found it's a good way of enjoying extra vegetables, especially on busy days when time is short.
Raw kale, spinach, avocado all make a good base to which I add whatever fruit and vegetables I may have in the fridge or fruit bowl.
Surprisingly, these ad hoc concoctions have all been quite tasty, though some, it has to be said, are rather dubious in colour- pond green?!


But if you want to be a bit more organised, then there are plenty of recipes and ideas to be found on the internet.
I have recently discovered Kellie's food to glow blog and love her vibrant recipes.
This breakfast smoothie is an adaptation of her green and black forest smoothie.
I followed her recipe, using frozen mixed berries, but added about half a cup of oats to the mixture as I wanted something spoonable rather than drinkable.


An extra spoonful of yoghurt and a sprinkle of granola on top finished it off.
The raw cacoa powder meant it tasted quite decadent. 
A delicious alternative breakfast and one which could very well become a favourite especially during the summer months.



With the lengthening days, spring (and therefore summer) is on its way.

lately ....sun and snow


We had snow.
Well okay, not lots of snow. Not snowploughs and shovels type snow, but a fine dusting, like icing sugar from a sifter type snow.
It's been a confusing winter for Nature. A November, December and January so mild that the daffodils and blossom are out and now, this past week, our first real frosts and snow.
On an early morning walk, there was blossom on the trees and thick frost on the ground.



Mr digandweed had a few days off and so we spent some time with our lovely family.


 After taking her first steps at Christmas, Tiny Girlie was measured for her first pair of shoes a couple of weeks ago and now there's no stopping her.

 Meanwhile, on the garden and lottie, it's an inbetween time of year. The days are lengthening and Spring is waiting in the wings, but it's still too cold and wet to do much save take a quick trip to the allotment to check things over.

But there has been the usual cooking and baking.
A perennial favourite - All Bran loaf. One of those off the back of the packet recipes which everyone seems to know.

Her blog is full of delicious looking recipes and equally delicious looking photos.

This recipe is called Ricotta and Spinach Gnudi. Gnudi are a bit like gnocchi but made with ricotta instead of potato. As you may guess, it is Italian in origin. Gnudi means naked and this is basically a ricotta and spinach filling minus the pasta. 
Much more delicious than it sounds.

pancakes ... with home made nutella

Pancakes, chocolate and banana, is a favourite combination with many people and rightly so.
This home made chocolate and hazelnut spread made a delicious change from the usual lemon and sugar combo.



The recipe is another from the Deliciously Ella website and can be found here. 
I found that the texture was slightly grainy ( maybe I didn't blitz the mixture enough) but the flavour gave the right nutty/chocolate hit.


I loosened the chocolate spread with a little hot water to give the right consistency for drizzling.

pancakes

It's pancake day ( Shrove Tuesday) next week.
I love pancakes; quick, easy, versatile and delicious! My absolute favourites are thin, lacy, delicate crepes. But pancakes come in so many other forms - sweet and savoury, thick and thin.
Here is a recipe for a savoury version.
I had just one or two of the little Butternut squash left from our autumn allotment harvest and this recipe from Jamie Oliver seemed just the thing to use them up.


I added some ground cumin ( about 1tsp) and a little hot smoked paprika (about 1/4 tsp) to the original recipe and served them with a mixed salad with a lemony dressing.


They were very nice.  But, I also need my fix of dainty, crispy edged crepes..


so I will be back with some traditional 'pancake day' pancakes, with lemon and sugar ...or if I have time


some home made Nutella.
