marmalade making and Breakfast Week


This week, 24-30 January is national Breakfast Week; an initiative by Shake up your wake up to encourage us all to eat a healthy breakfast each day.
Some people struggle with eating breakfast, but not me.
 I love breakfast.



Favourite breakfasts include:
a big bowl of creamy porridge
homemade granola with fruit and yoghurt
or if mr digandweed and I go out for brunch  - Eggs Benedict



And at this time of year, buttery toast with Seville orange marmalade is delicious too.
The knobbly Seville orange, has a short season from the end of December to mid February and making marmalade has become an annual ritual for me.


This is my go-to recipe from Delia.


The only tedious part of the recipe is shredding the peel. This is where a willing helper is useful, however, mr digandweed was unavailable but in his absence I found radio 4 helped to pass the time
( and cutting the peel with kitchen scissors, was, I found, much quicker than chopping with a knife)


The result is a beautiful, vibrant preserve with a perfect sweet/sharp balance.


Enjoy with tea and toast - perfect for January mornings.

  1. I am not big on breakfast, preferring to eat a little later about 11. The marmalade looks wonderful I will definitely be giving that one a go.

  2. It is always a delight to stop by here for your marvelous food photos. They are a delight to the eyes. I tried making marmelade once many years ago - it was amazingly easy and evidently foolproof, for mine was as delicious as yours looks to be.

  4. Lovely! I made a batch last week and have bought more oranges to make more. I can't resist them. I'll try the scissors tip though. Your breakfast looks very inviting

  5. I too made marmalade the other day, but I use the whole-fruit method and cook the fruit in a pressure cooker (45 mins) before scooping out the pips and slicing the now soft peel. It was surprisingly easy. I read that the pips aren't essential to the set, so disguarded them before boiling the cooking liquid, sugar and sliced peel - I was amazed to get a perfect set.
    It's particularly delicious on a bowl of porridge with a dollop of natural set yogurt and a few blueberries for breakfast :-)

    1. That sounds like a good method as it did take quite a long time to simmer the peel until it was soft. I hadn't thought of putting marmalade on my porridge. What a great idea! I must try that.
