All things autumnal...

Autumn has officially arrived and with it a sudden drop in temperatures and some overnight gales, which caused leaves and small twigs to cascade from the neighbouring ash tree, littering the garden ....along with the capping from the end of the roof guttering.  (Though, thankfully that is now fixed, after a well placed bash from mr digandweed's hand!)

The nights too are closing in; it's lights on and curtains drawn by 7:30 these days.

This picture was taken the other evening, as the sun was setting and the birds were gathering together to roost.

Though some people mourn the passing of summer,  I love all the simple pleasures that autumn brings: cosy nights in, wooly socks, warming soups and, one of  our little rituals at Fenland Lottie, fresh scones and jam on a Sunday evening.
The other day, I was given some pears from a neighbour's garden and decided to make a quick and easy pear and ginger compote, perfect to spoon onto hot, buttered toast or warm scones ( or even on your morning porridge)

It took about 30 minutes to make and used a minimal amount of sugar, so it's not the sort of thing to keep indefinitely in the cupboard, but stored in the fridge should last for several days.

Here is the recipe in case you would like to try it.

Hoping all is well in your little corner amid all the continuing uncertainty.
We are keeping fingers and toes firmly crossed here in the hope that further restrictions won't prevent us seeing our  new little grandchild when the time comes.

  1. Loads of pears here as well. I've been wondering if I can dry them. I've been doing apples, but I wonder about the juice content in a pear. Lovely photo of the birds, always beautiful to see against the setting sun.

    1. Dried apples sound wonderful. I would think you could do the same with pears, though I've never tried. It's a good way of preserving without loads of sugar, isn't it!

  2. I usually like the arrival of autumn but the continuing uncertainty is making me feel restless this year. The compote sounds delicious and your photos are stunning as usual

  3. I love Autumn, with the warm the abundance of berries, fruit and the changing of the leaves - a real feast for the eyes as well as the stomach! Scones and jam or compote sounds like a very good idea, although I've got apple spice muffins in the oven at the moment so maybe next week. Beautiful photos too
